Clive on Boom! Studios Hellraiser... and other comments

Clive : "The [Hellraiser] comic books have been in many cases rather brilliant and actually really taken the mythology to new and interesting places, so I'm very proud of the comic books in a way that I'm not really proud of the many sequels to the movie...
"I've been, I'd like to say, a major part of the comic book creation, but I think that's pretentious of me. I think in a way the comics have to tell their own tales through the people who write and paint them."

Clive Barker

By David Barr Kirtley, Geek's Guide to the Galaxy, Episode 151, 10 May 2015

Matt Gagnon (Boom! Studios) : "Beyond being a legendary creator of all things macabre, Clive Barker is truly an amazing individual and I'm proud to be able to work with him on reviving one of his most celebrated creations with Hellraiser. I've known Clive for years, but this is the first chance we've had to work together and I couldn't be more excited."

Press Release

By [ ], BOOM! Studios, 13 December 2010

Christopher Monfette : "Without giving too much away, I'd hope that fans of the film series will see these issues, collectively, as the unofficial cap to a trilogy begun with Hellraiser and Hellbound. It's very much rooted in that original universe, exploring Pinhead's own personal suffering, his own demons, and an almost literal deal with the Devil. And it all builds toward a harrowing conclusion that will fundamentally change the character, and the entire world of Hellraiser, as you know it."

Clive Barker Revisits Hellraiser In Comic Form

By Stephen Johnson, The Feed, 13 December 2010 (note - full text online at http://g4tv.com/thefeed/)

Tim Bradstreet : "I'll be making Hellraiser my new home as ongoing monthly cover artist. I'm thrilled to be teaming up again with Clive and his clan at Seraphim, as well as with Matt Gagnon, Ian Brill and the gang at Boom Studios. This series will also mark the re-teaming of Leonardo Manco and myself. Leo and I last tread the boards together on John Constantine: Hellblazer. More to come - "

Clive Barker Returns to Hellraiser

By Tim Bradstreet, The Online World of Timothy Bradstreet, 13 December 2010 (note - full text online at http://timbradstreet.typepad.com/the_online_world_of_timot/)

Christopher Monfette : "Just as much as we're aiming to respect the style and tone of the original two films - unarguably the two entries closest to Clive's original vision - it was equally important for me as a writer to honour Doug's contribution to the character. There wasn't a line written for Pinhead that didn't first have to pass through the filter of Doug's voice. If I couldn't imagine his articulation of the dialogue, it would instantly get re-written. I cannot think of a more functional marriage between aesthetic and performance than that of the pins and the man into whom they've been so painfully placed. I hope that Doug would read these books approvingly and find some aspect of himself in there..."

Hellraiser

By Chris Monfette, e-mail to Phil and Sarah Stokes, 14 December 2010

Tim Bradstreet : "Here's a new tidbit fairly hot off the presses, this time for the relaunch of the franchise that put Clive Barker on the map in the US of A, HELLRAISER...
"With the new comic series from Boom Studios he's 100% involved and sharing actual scripting credit with co-writer, Christopher Monfette. The interiors of the new book will be drawn by none other than my 'ol partner, Leonardo Manco! Leo and I enjoyed a nice cover/interior artist relationship on HELLBLAZER a few years back. His stuff is just awesome.
"First issue hits stands in March. Stand by for a whole lotta more. You're gonna shit when you see what Clive has up his sleeve."

Forum Post

By Tim Bradstreet, Tim Bradstreet Official Forum, 16 December 2010 (note - full text online at http://rawstudios.invisionzone.com/index.php?showforum=12)

Christopher Monfette : "Hellraiser is what happens with a demon has a midlife crisis, LOL...But I say too much! "...I deliver the third script next week, and it's been endless fun. Early pages look gorgeous. Dark, violent fun. Plus, I get to write dialogue for PINHEAD! It's like having permission to go alliteration crazy! "Hellraiser fans, know this. The upcoming comic looks incredible. Myself and @RealCliveBarker are going to terrify, and maybe even move, you."

Twitter Post

By Chris Monfette, 11 January 2011

Christopher Monfette : "Clive has a feeling that the novels are his novels and the comics are the comics. They'll have their own continuity. If and when 'The Scarlet Gospels' comes out, it'll be its own beast. I'm not sure where it will fall in the continuity of the books, comics or films."

Chris Monfette Talks Hellraiser

By Ryan Turek, Shock Till You Drop, 20 March 2011 (note - full text online at http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/)

Christopher Monfette : "[With the free prelude,] Boom wanted to give fans a flavor of what the series was trying to accomplish, a cost-free assurance to diehard fans that this is the classic version of Pinhead - Clive's Pinhead - and a teaser for new fans of the kinds of visceral horror to come. Because it's unconnected to the mythology we're developing in the series, we had the freedom to simply enjoy some bloody fun with the project as a one-off. I initially suggested a few potential set-ups - one in a 1950's S&M brothel, one in a bombed out German village post-WWII - but the image of an inmate sitting in an electric chair, brandishing the box, kept pulling at me... It was tremendous fun, and I'm hopeful that fans will enjoy it as a straight-up bit of gruesome fun."

A Revelatory Interview

By Phil and Sarah Stokes, 18 March 2011 (note - full text here)

Press Release : "BOOM! Studios announced today that Clive Barker's Hellraiser #1 is completely sold out! In a historic promotion, BOOM! simultaneously released an all-new, all-original, free and completely shareable Prelude To Hellraiser #1 PDF which aided in the dramatic sell out of Clive Barker's Hellraiser #1 within the first three days of release!"

Hellraiser #1 Sells Out In Only 3 Days!

Tim Bradstreet : "Clive Barker's new Hellraiser comics series, published by Boom Studios, is off like a shot. Great response from the fans and sales are looking bright. Glad to be a part of this one, especially with where the series is heading under the guidance of Clive. Some unbelievable stuff coming your way. If you weren't aware of this new series then now's the time to get onboard."

Clive Barker's Hellraiser - Lance Henriksen's Not Bad For a Human

By Tim Bradstreet, The Online World of Timothy Bradstreet, 2 April 2011 (note - full text online at http://timbradstreet.typepad.com/the_online_world_of_timot/)

Tim Bradstreet : "Now back to Clive Barker's Hellraiser. Been also having a great time creating covers to this series, and real happy to see how well the book is doing. The numbers have been great and I've also had a ball doing retailer incentive covers on the side for this. Basically they are the pencilled versions of the covers, and I just love that. It's more organic than the supertweaked final color art. And for young artists out there, it's a unique look inside the creative process they might not normally get to see. Just finished issue #8 and it's my favorite so far. You can get a peek at the pencils if you are on Facebook."

Walking Dead - Lance Henriksen - V20 - Comicon - Hellraiser and Star Trek!

By Tim Bradstreet, The Online World of Timothy Bradstreet, 29 July 2011 (note - full text online at http://timbradstreet.typepad.com/the_online_world_of_timot/)

Mark Miller : "We're about 80% of the way done [with Scarlet Gospels]... and it would be further along but we lost all of our Hellraiser [comic] writers and so I'm pretty much, you know, the number one guy on that and that's taking up a lot of time. But my run ends with issue sixteen. I've just finished fourteen. As soon as I've finished fifteen and sixteen and they get those back for editing and those are ready to go... [It'll take] maybe a month, maybe two months... but Gospels is on its way!"

Mad Monster Party Part 1

By Ryan Danhauser, The Clive Barker Podcast, 28 March 2012 (note - full audio online at www.clivebarkercast.com/)

Brandon Seifert : "I just got a cold email about [Hellraiser] from Boom! and what had happened was a friend of mine in the industry had talked to them and had been like 'Hey, you should hire this guy to do some HELLRAISER stuff' and they were given WITCH DOCTOR, they liked it, and they got in touch with me. Initially when they first contacted me, the idea was that I'd do a short story in the annual and the HELLRAISER annual would have several different creative teams and I would be doing like an 8 to 16 page story, but over the course of talking to them about it, they ended up offering me the lead story, which ended up being a 23 page lead, which is kind of strange, because it started out 22 pages and then the only change that they asked me to make was to make the ending "a bit bigger" and I was like 'Okay, can I have more pages to do that?' They were like 'Sure, have another page.' I'm like, 'Awesome.' So yeah, it was just serendipity and I think it worked out really well for all of us."

AICN Comics Q&@

By Ambush Bug / Mark L. Miller, AintItCool.com, 10 April 2012 (note - full text online at www.aintitcool.com)

Christopher Monfette : "There are always those little moments where you get the final issue and you go, 'Ah, shit, I should have been more descriptive there, should have broken that dialogue into two balloons, should have added a panel there.' Tiffany is a good example of that. I didn't describe her sufficiently - just as surprisingly adult and grown into her womanhood - and that somehow translated through Stephen or Clive into something a bit more fetishized than I think readers were really able to wrap their heads around. But in a way, that also gives you these little gifts, these surprises that can change your storytelling or how you treat that character moving forward. It's a cool way for the writer to discover stuff about the universe that even s/he didn't know.
"Hell, the fact that the Female has as strong a presence in issue #7 as she does was the happy accident of being told I couldn't invent any new creatures or points of mythology within Hell. Personally, I think the scene with her and Kirsty on the boxes, traveling through the labyrinth together, talking about her love for Pinhead and the nature of suffering, is one of the best in first eight. Or, at least, one of the most interesting to write."

Forum Post, The Hellbound Web

By Chris Monfette, 30 May 2012 (note - full text online at http://www.jsofts.com/hbw/index.php?)

Christopher Monfette : "For me, better or worse, Hellraiser is a franchise and while, artistically speaking, every writer loves a good, meaty, constantly shifting narrative, every reader loves a cast of characters they can follow from chapter to chapter. If you're smart, you can use this to give the audience a healthy dose of interaction, generate loyalties and expectations, and then subvert them, use the characters as emotional stakes. For whatever reason, the death of our new Cenobites feels very much as if it is simply fulfilling the bullet-point of Stuff Happening. I'd always hoped we'd get some time with these new creatures to see them at work and let them become as iconic as the original crew we'd just spent eight issues killing - not as victims, but as sacrifices, which I hope made the audience feel something about their deaths. I'm not in the loop on these new issues, but it certainly seems as if Kirsty and Pinhead are the only two characters you're meant to invest in, and everything happening is intended to bring their conflict to a head. Very interested to see how it all plays out, and from what ground they'll continue in the next eight issues..."

Forum Post, The Hellbound Web

By Chris Monfette, 5 June 2012 (note - full text online at http://www.jsofts.com/hbw/index.php?)

Brandon Seifert : "'The Road Below' picks up pretty soon after Kirsty's conversion, when she's still enthusiastic about Hell's mission and is eager to do her job: retrieve the sinners who call the Cenobites to Earth
"I kind of think 'good intentions gone bad' is the engine that drives the Hellraiser universe. From Frank Cotton just looking for a good time, and getting tortured by Hell, to Julia Cotton who just wanted her lover back - but had to kill people to get it. With Kirsty, everything she does, she does with the best intentions. She hunted the Cenobites for years, thinking they were evil - and then discovered they were basically cosmic cops, and she'd been on the wrong side the whole time. Most recently, she became a Cenobite so she could 'change the system,' only for it to lead to the death - again! - of her lovers and her friends. Kirsty just can't win.
"Kirsty and the Female Cenobite are really the only classic Hellraiser characters in 'The Road Below.' Everybody else is new, but the new characters will certainly have some familiar elements that fans of Clive's work will recognize. The main Hellraiser comic has lots of allusions to Clive's other creations, and Harry D'Amour, from the Books of the Art series, is one of the main characters, now. 'The Road Below' plays off the fact that the Cenobites and the Labyrinth are only one part of the big, strange world that Clive's dreamed up."

Brandon Seifert Raises Hell With Clive Barker's Cenobites

By [ ], CBR News, 10 July 2012 (note - full text online at www.comicbookresources.com)

Brandon Seifert : "The spin I'm bringing to Hellraiser is a focus on the characters involved. In the story I wrote for this year's Hellraiser Annual, I did a character study on Captain Elliott Spencer, the man who used to be Pinhead. In Hellraiser: The Road Below, I'm focusing on Kirsty Cotton. We've seen Kirsty make lots of hard decisions during the course of the main Hellraiser comic series, and we've seen some come back to haunt her. In The Road Below, Kirsty's going to have to face effects of her choices that were inevitable, but that she never considered. No good deed goes unpunished, after all - and we all know what the road to Hell is paved with."

Brandon Seifert on Hellraiser: The Road Below

By Josh Flanagan, iFanboy.com, 11 July 2012 (note - full text online at www.ifanboy.com)

Mark Miller : "I was working, I think maybe around at that time as an intern and the writer of the first eight issues had - Boom! wanted to move on and we hired a new guy and he had missed his deadline - that's Anthony DiBlasi, who made Dread and Cassadaga - and I think he was working on Cassadaga at the time and he was like right in the middle of production and I know he wanted to do the comic book so badly and he just couldn't do it because he was so friggin overwhelmed and Boom! just said, 'You know, it's nothing personal, we just have to - the comic is due - we need to move on.' And so he turned in half of issue 9 and I finished that for him and then we rolled over the contract and I took over from him...
"It was only supposed to be a temporary thing because I was there at Seraphim, I'd been doing editing since the first issue, so I knew the story and I had the time and I, you know, I'd obviously worked with Clive a lot so I knew the voice and I took over, starting with issue 9 and I think they were set to replace me after maybe even two issues, but I guess I did a decent enough job and they kept me on.
"The plan was to keep me on then till issue 16, so I had an arc planned out up to 16 and... I think they liked it and they wanted to expand again so I went from just writing two issues to writing up to issue 16 and then they expanded 16 to 20, so there was a lot of - alright, I guess I had set my trajectory 'here' but now I've kinda got to throw some extra stuff in and make it over 'here'. And then when issue 20 came we'd already used Brandon Seifert for The Road Below and he did a phenomenal job, and during my Hellraiser arc I sort of went from intern to creative to co-head of the company which, you know, that's a hell of a learning curve. And so I had to step out from Hellraiser because I didn't have the time any more."

Mark Miller : "We started it as though everything after [Hellraiser: Hellbound] never happened - which some people think is fair... It takes place, I think it was 25 years after Hellraiser II happened and now Kirsty, the lead character, has gathered a band of friends who have also been touched by hell and they together fight against hell and try to destroy all the boxes. And it all goes wrong."

Tim Bradstreet : "I love to work with Clive, but it's a very frustrating job because they're not paying me the kind of money to art direct me, which is fine. I sometimes have to redo a cover four times, but I'm a team player. Clive deserves to get what he wants, but it can be frustrating because I can't put that kind of time in with how long it takes to do a cover and how much I get paid to do it. I have other responsibilities."

SDCC 2012: Catching up With Tim Bradstreet

By David Gillette, Comic Booked.com, 14 July 2012 (note - full text online at www.comicbooked.com)

Brandon Seifert : "As we found out in the main Hellraiser comic, Captain Elliot has always just been an evil dick, like he didn't start that when he got recruited by hell. He has just always been that way whereas Kirsty is not an evil dick and did not become one. Even though she is working for hell, she is still the same Kirsty, so you've got this thing where now she's this good well intentioned person who is kind of doing some fairly horrible things in the line of work and it's a job... Once she became a Cenobite, she basically realized that the cenobites are kind of like this cosmic law and order thing where it's kind of more in the Judeo-Christian hell vein than we realized before. They are there to punish sinners and so that means that they are there to make sure that the bad people actually get punished for the bad things they did in life rather than getting off scott-free for it, so she kind of embraced that for a while and this is still in that time and this is the story where she discovers the ramifications of that and discovers that just because she means well and because she believes that the job is one worth doing, it doesn't mean that it's going to go well...
"All of my communication with Clive goes through my editor, so I haven't had any direct communication yet. He's a busy guy. He's got a lot of stuff going on, so I'm not surprised that he's never shot me an email or anything."

Brandon Seifert : "The whole 'Hell is a metaphysical prison for sinners and the Cenobites are the prison guards' thing isn't my idea, or my interpretation of Hellraiser - it was revealed as the reason the Cenobites exist in the current Hellraiser ongoing series by Clive Barker and his collaborators. I'm just going with what Clive established."

AICN Comics Q&@ - additional comments

By Ambush Bug / Mark L. Miller, AintItCool.com, 24 August 2012 (note - full text online at www.aintitcool.com)

Brandon Seifert : "The Road Below picks up near the end of the first year of the Hellraiser ongoing, when the status quo has been completely up-ended, and then it runs from there. I tried to make it pretty self-contained, so it's not going to be as hard to get into as picking up the current ongoing mid-run - but there's definitely a learning curve. But if you're a fan of the movies and you want to pick it up, all you really need to know is that Kirsty is the new Pinhead, and she's trying to lead Hell in a 'kinder, gentler' direction. But we all know where good intentions lead...
"Hellraiser is Clive's baby - but he's a very busy man. So most of my direction comes through BOOM! Studios or through Clive's film company Seraphim. But Clive is reading all the outlines, all the scripts, everything - and making sure everything matches with where he wants Hellraiser to go."

Writer Brandon Seifert Takes 'Hellraiser' On 'The Road Below'

By BigJ, Bloody Disgusting.com, 29 October 2012 (note - full text online at www.bloodydisgusting.com)

Brandon Seifert : "Clive has been a really good at being involved, without micromanaging. He's got his hand on the rudder of the Hellraiser comics. He steers them as a whole, but he leaves most of the smaller decisions to the people writing the scripts. The Road Below was an idea I pitched to Boom! and Seraphim Films, and they approved it. What notes I've been given since then have involved making sure we're all on the same page about things like Kirsty Cotton's motivations and the things she will and won't do, even as a Cenobite. But that's mostly it - big-picture stuff. The details - including the plots - have pretty much better left for me to take care of."

Brandon Seifert : "[The Dark Watch] picks up with familiar characters in unfamiliar roles, and I'm making a big effort to make it accessible for new readers.
"Hellraiser is about the Cenobites and the Cotton family, sure - but it's about other things too. It's about the people who escape from Hell, just like it's about the people who put them there."

'Hellraiser' continues to horrify with 'The Dark Watch'

By Brian Truitt, USAToday.com, 15 November 2012 (note - full text online at www.usatoday.com)

Brandon Seifert : "THE DARK WATCH definitely has an ensemble cast - but it's not a team book. The characters in it aren't all working together - some are sworn enemies!
"Really, THE DARK WATCH is just the continuation of the HELLRAISER ongoing that wraps up this week - 'season two,' in TV lingo. The current HELLRAISER ongoing ends with some really major changes to the status quo, for our cast, for Earth and for Hell. THE DARK WATCH is where the characters who survive pick up the pieces."

Ben Meares : [re. Hellraiser Annual 2013] "It gave me carte blanche to make my own hell which was a whole lot of fun... It all started with a concept that Clive had which was the idea that somebody's manufacturing fake puzzle boxes and the problem is that they work. And that was basically the idea that he gave me to run with and then, while I was writing it, I continued getting his input..."

Mark Miller : "It's tough, man. It's hard jumping into someone else's mythology. This is a world that's been set up for years and people have their own ideas about it and you don't want to upset those. And at the same time, writing for an ongoing series is - it's not really how my mind works. You know, I watch Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy and I watch the way that things are planted and pay off later, and over a long period of time and it just blows my mind. I don't know how people's minds work that way. I think in ninety minute chunks - that's all my mind can grasp - so to sort of sit down at the issue where you're hired and say, 'Here's what came before - ahead of you is a blank slate. Make everything that's behind you work and keep people interested in perpetuity.' Oh that sounds great! No problem!"

Mark Miller : "Bestiary is about our love for anthologies. We all grew up reading the EC comics and watching The Twilight Zone. And since Clive's introduction to the world was through his Books of Blood anthologies, we thought it'd be a blast to take it back to our roots. The great thing about Hellraiser is that it can be about anything. Everyone suffers, right? And because of the nature of the form, it means we get the chance to work with a lot of talented artists and writers. It's going to be fun!"

BOOM! Announces New 'Hellraiser' Anthology Series!

By BigJ, Bloody Disgusting.com, 5 May 2014 (full text at www.bloody-disgusting.com)

Ben Meares: "On the upcoming Hellraiser Bestiary I'm writing at least one story per issue - each issue will be three stories apiece, going back to like the old, the early '90s / late '80s idea where it was all of these Hellraiser anthology stories... and the reason that we chose to go that way was because the anthology ones are the ones that are still sold in Barnes and Noble, they're still remembered and they're still loved and this is where people like Mike Mignola and Steve Niles and John Bolton - these guys - Alex Ross - all got their start on these stories and we're hoping to do the same again. And I've read every script that's going to be in it and they're all really, really, really good - shockingly good, even - I mean in an anthology there's usually a few duds and there are none in this one."
