...Adding to the prestige of certain of the limited editions of books over the years has been the concept of including a unique piece of artwork inside each one.
More than 200 different sketches for the deluxe edition of the Illustrator book led the way. For those people whose enthusiasm for Barker's art was such that
$350 was an acceptable price to pay for a book showcasing years of sketches and paintings, the lure of an original piece of artwork inside each copy was
irresistible. This was followed by the much rarer lettered copies of Shadows In Eden a year later. More than a decade passed before the appearance of the 50
copy deluxe edition of Abarat brought a new collection of artwork for collectors to track down.
We are lucky enough to own several of the books which are represented below and the publishers at Earthling and Bad Moon Books have been kind enough to allow us to present images from their records. Other images have been sent to us by fans and collectors and more still have
ticked past on eBay where we are unsure as to who owns them now...
Published in 1990 by Arcane / Eclipse, this book was issued in several forms (see bibliography here). The rarest edition was a slipcased hardback, limited to 200 copies (and a handful of artist presentation copies) each of which had a numbered limitation page with a pre-printed square inside which Clive drew a sketch...
* Curiously, both of these illustrations are numbered 80...
** And this AP sketch is in a regular, not deluxe edition copy.
The 52 lettered copies of Stephen Jones's 1991 collection, Shadows In Eden (see bibliography here), each came with an original sketch, as did 8 Publisher's Copies...
To mark the release of Abarat in 2002 (see bibliography here) Clive contributed an original full-page sketch for each of the 50 Deluxe editions of Abarat produced by B.E. Trice. These are on a blank page opposite the limitation page...
Matching the design of the first volume, 2004 saw the release of B.E.Trice's Abarat II (see bibliography here) complete with unique sketches by Clive within the pages of their Deluxe editions. As with Abarat, B.E.Trice produced a run of 50 of these deluxe, lettered editions which sit proudly alongside volume one...

Earthling's 20th anniversary edition of The Hellbound Heart (see bibliography here) took 26 of Clive's specially drawn sketches and encased one inside each of the custom traycases that contained a lettered edition, together with several more in both PC copies and an early prototype...
When Mr Maximillian Bacchus and his adventures finally saw print some 25 years after they were written, alongside the regular and other limited editions (see bibliography here) Bad Moon Books lovingly crafted 10 'ultra' copies with original artwork from both Clive and Richard Kirk - Clive's showcased below...
For our collection of Clive's non-fiction works from Earthling Publications (see bibliography here) Clive added sketches to each of the 26 lettered copies.
The signature sheets for Dark Regions Press' 13 copy (plus 5 PC) edition of The Midnight Meat Train each featured an original sketch by Clive (see limited editions of Books of Blood stories here). NB: a number of unbound signature sheets were released separately with no letter designated.
Dark Regions Press collected The Body Politic and In The Flesh into a single volume and the 13 copies (plus 5 PC copies) of its ultra-deluxe limited edition came with an original sketch by Clive. (see limited editions of Books of Blood stories here)
Not a limited edition but, when Subterranean Press released a collection of short erotic pieces, Tonight, Again, Clive remarqued 12 trade copies for sale (see bibliography here).
